By the end of December it was beginning to look as if the constraints placed on travelling by the civil war would not matter. Preliminary searches showed that the behaviour of the general population (not to mention the weather) was leaving the unit completely nonplussed:

We are going ahead with the enquiries but it is very uphill work. The scent is far too cold and the Greeks far too light fingered; they take everything away including the engines. They are also great story-tellers and many miles are being travelled on quite hopeless quests.

The weather has been frightful; pouring with rain, and the roads have been cut all over the place and now have raging torrents pouring across them. This situation does not help us any at all.232
